South Africa's President
Thabo Mbeki (left) and Botswana's President Festus Mogae during the
official launch of southern Africa's first Transfrontier Peace Park,
the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, on Friday, 12 May 2000. A Peace Parks
Foundation initiative, the 42 000kmē park comprises the Kalahari Gemsbok
National Park in South Africa and the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana.
A life-size bronze sculpture of two running oryx by Alan Ainslie
was unveiled by the two presidents during this prestigious occasion.
The two running antelope symbolise the co-operation between the two
countries, and the greater freedom of movement wildlife in the park
can now experience with the lifting of the fences between the two parks.
